Do you work with people who don’t speak to you when they first see you?
Do you find that habit annoying?
Most workers find themselves irritated when their boss, staff, and/or co-workers fail to greet them.
I, too, found myself irritated when I worked with a co-worker who would walk by my desk – first thing every morning – and not greet me.
Oh, boy, would that burn me up!
Why the typical greeting is withheld in the workplace is a mystery to most.
For those who have been angered by the lack of greetings from bosses, co-workers, and/or staff, several theories have been created.
For instance, some say that the greeting is withheld because bosses, co-workers, and staff are not morning people, which is why the greeting is not exchanged.
Others say that bosses, co-workers, and staff are so focused on what they must do for the day that their thoughts are consumed by the need to complete tasks not the need to give greetings.
Whatever the theory, the fact remains that greetings are a way to build and strengthen work relationships.
It is important to remember that greetings help you to establish a connection with those you work with.
Greetings become the first line of conversation between you and your bosses, co-workers, and staff.
Greetings help to set the stage for communicating requests, reports, problems, and progress.
Greetings are a vital part of a work relationship that should not be ignored.
STRENGTH TIP #2: Greetings set the tone for your workday. Speak to those you work with upon first encountering them. A simple and brief “Hello,” “Good Morning,” or “Glad to see you” will humanize your work connection and help you to promote the right tone for your day.
